Updated Hobby Bingo Card for 2023

I'm kicking off 2023 with a new Wargame Hobby Bingo card:

You know the drill– Starting from January 1, 2023 through December 31, 2023 check off the boxes for the hobby projects you finish; a single project can only count for one box.

I've shuffled the squares around a little, and removed some of the ones that were overly specific like the ones about modeling relics and such. I've added three new squares:

–Incorporate a non-painted special effect into a hobby project
While painted source lighting is a great effect, it's still just painting. This category is for adding effects that aren't painted, like LED lighting in a piece of scenery, or water effects on a model's base. I've seen people do wondrous things with motorized parts– spinning gattling guns on Dreadnoughts, for example, or smoke effects in engine stacks. Personally, I've always fantasized about having a Dreadnought with a sound card that played a clip of Robocop's ED-209 clomping around and roaring. The sky is the limit!

–Paint a model or figure that you don't intend to use for gaming
Sometimes it's fun to paint something just because it's cool, even if it won't see any action on the tabletop. Busts, and painting competition pieces could fit in this category, or you could paint one of those snazzy 40K action figures. This could be a plain old model car or even just a model for an army you don't collect, simply because you like it.

–Paint a model for someone else
Doing things for other people is nice! You could paint a model as a gift, or donate it to a charity auction. Even painting commission models would count, since you're not going to keep them. I once painted up some "trophy banners" for a Warhammer Fantasy tournament to represent the unit banners captured during the game, and let my opponents keep them afterward as a memento of the game.

Thanks to my friends Chris Walton and Ron Kruzie for the new square suggestions!

Remember, the point is to paint new models, build more scenery, and step outside your comfort zone by experimenting with new techniques and generating the motivation to work on projects that might be a little intimidating. To that end, I've tried to incorporate a bit of painting, model converting, scenery building, and experimental technique in each row and column. Try for a bingo, or go crazy and fill in the whole card! Happy painting!

'Til next time!

  1. Awesome. Thank you for updating the card. I have participate in this the last 2 years and even managed to get a bingo for 2022. My goal every year is to fill the whole card, but I always lose track and not quite finish all of them in a year.

    1. That's great! I think the trick to finishing the whole card is to make sure you complete 2 per month, and save the easy ones for the end so you can knock them out quickly if you need to catch up.

  2. Never tried this but seems like a fun idea. I may give it a whirl!

    1. Go for it! Even if you just use it as an idea generator for *what* to work on next.
