Rounding Out the Nighthaunt Hero Roster

Getting closer to finishing off my Nighthaunt backlog...

I worked on these four models as a single batch over the course of the week– Painting their black robes, blending the ethereal tails, and picking out the metal bits. I put the final touches on them and finished up their bases this morning.

On a side note (rant), I struggled for a couple hours with the Dull Cote spray because it kept going on too shiny. It wasn't glossy, mind you, but it kept drying with a noticeable sheen. I sprayed a few times, tried heating the can and not heating it, tried using a hair dryer to dry the spray (which usually yields great results), but they were shinier than before I sprayed them at all. In the end, I had to brush GW Lahmian Medium over their robes to dull them back down.

Testors Dull Cote used to be the gold standard for dead-flat matte varnish, but no longer. I believe they had changed the formula back in 2009 (right around the time that they abandoned the black and yellow "Dull Cote" label for the universal white and blue "clear coat" label, and the spray has never been the same. It goes on more like "lusterless" spray most of the time, and occasionally I get a can that behaves properly. I tried three different cans today, and they were all the same. (And I'm not an idiot, it is Dull Cote; I compared the serial number on the bottom of the can as well as the name on the barcode sticker.) So, if Testors really is going out of business, maybe I won't be sorry to see them go after all.

My second Guardian of Souls– Minister Kruhl, Keeper of the Dead Light. Since the last time I showed his assembled model, I added an extra ethereal wisp to fill out the base a little more. That piece is the bottom bit of robe from the Empire banner that I used in the statue garden.

And my second Spirit Torment– Zeracon the Soul Hunter, with his two Chainghast attendants.

I really like these Chainghast models. They were easy to assemble and paint, despite their flimsy arms. I've added tombstones to all of the bases to provide extra stability to the tails to prevent the models from being too "springy." It really helps.

Coming up for my Nighthaunt queue are the big centerpiece models, Kurdoss Valentian and the Black Coach.

'Til next time!
