In this installment, I'll talk about how I painted the Survivor and Demon miniatures.
I've gotten a bit side tracked on this project, but I wanted to at least finish the models before the end of the year. So, I painted them pretty quickly with lots of drybrushing and washes, trying not to get too bogged down in the details.
The Survivor
The design of the space suit was giving me Dune stillsuit vibes, so I chose a sandy/ rust color. First, I basecoated the him with GW Zamesi Desert, and then drybrushed that up with Formula P3 Sulfuric Yellow and GW Ushabti Bone. The armor plates and helmet were painted with Vallejo Grunge Brown, and then the edges brushed with a mix of Grunge Brown and Ushabti Bone to pop the highlights.
Next, I washed the whole miniature with GW Aggaros Dunes Contrast. From there, it was just a matter of picking out the metallic details and the visor.
The Demons
These guys were a little more involved than the survivor, but I tried to keep their color scheme simple to they wouldn't be too busy. I started by basecoating the skin with Army Painter Necrotic Flesh and then drybrushing it with a mix of Necrotic Flesh and GW Screaming Skull. Next, I picked out all the pipes, cables, and hoses with GW's The Fang (blueish-grey), and then lightly drybrushed them with Screaming Skull. Finally, I basecoated all the metal bits with Army Painter Gun Metal.
The entire miniature was then washed with Aggaros Dunes Contrast. Once the wash had dried, I applied some rust on the metal with a mix of Grunge Brown and orange, and bloodied up the connection points on the flesh with some splotches of Vallejo Gorey Red and Brown Ink. At this stage, I sprayed the model with Tamiya TS-80 Flat Clear to give it a uniform matte finish, and then carefully overbrushed the metal with a mix of Army Painter Gun Metal and Shining Silver to recapture the metallic shine.
The eyes were painted similar to gems– Dark red at the top, lighter red at the bottom, and a white highlight spot. Only the Frog Demon got the full treatment; the eyes on the other demons were so small I simply painted them red and added a tiny white spot.
Part of what kept me from moving forward on the figures sooner was that I needed to settle on a color scheme for the board so the figures' bases would match. I went with trusty Fang grey for the flooring, with some rust wash and a little metal drybrushed over it. The caution stripes and pipes were painted the same way I've painted all my other Skull Forge Scenics bases. You can see a full video tutorial on my YouTube channel:
