Bugs! Bugs! Bugs!
Just a quick post showing off my completed Tomb Scorpions and Tomb Swarms–

I've had these metal scorpions for a few years; I bought a couple on ebay during the early days of Age of Sigmar with the intention of allying them into my Death faction. I only painted one, and when the Old World dropped, I re-based it for my Tomb Kings army. I just finished up the third one, completing the trio.

This time, I remembered to get a photo of its base before I glued the model in place. Larger bases like this are great for scenic elements. The obelisk is from my Skull Forge Scenics range, and the tablet on the right was sculpted.

As with my previous scorpions, I posed the legs to be climbing over the terrain. This one has more of a forward lean, with its tail further up in the air, ready to sting. (The irony being that I almost never use the sting attack, preferring to use all four of the model's attacks for its claws, because they have the chance of instantly killing both men and monsters!)

One bit of conversion work I did was to make the mummy in the back unique from the other two– I added some extra canopic jars and sculpted a flail in his right hand.

Here the three scorpions: The one on the left is as it comes, and the other two were modified.

After finishing the scorpion, I went back to working on my Tomb Swarms. I had hit a bit of a wall with them because the bugs were looking pretty bland. I was inspired by an image of a scorpion that was black with subtle red tinting on its claws and tail. I tried to emulate that here to get the scorpions to stand out from the rest of the bugs. I also applied the dark red-brown wash to the larger bugs in the pile, and I think everything works pretty well.

These new swarms are such an improvement over the old, mostly flat, metal swarms from 2001.

I really appreciate the homage to the skeleton that was on the old base. It is recreated perfectly, with the same pose, headdress, and even the band on its arm! Good show!

'Til next time!
