From Beneath the Sands
I'm closing in on 2000 points of Tomb Kings– Here's a look at my newest unit, skirmishing skeleton archers, and some of the other projects in the queue.
This unit began as an add-on to my two 15-man skeleton archer regiments. The plan was to be able to field the archers as either a formed regiment with full command, or to use these skeletons emerging from the sand to replace the command models, allowing me to field them as a unit of skeleton skirmishers armed with warbows.
I converted these with my cowled heads and Skull Forge Scenics scorpion swords. The rest is a Tomb Kings archer with Grave Guard legs.
I chopped off the bottom of the legs and positioned everything to give the model a forward hunch, with one hand on the ground as if it's pushing itself up out of the earth.
I glued rivulets of sand running off its back and hanging from its rib cage on the front to complete the effect of emerging from beneath the sand.
Here are the first six, primed and sprayed with Tamiya TS-3 Dark Yellow.
And the full, finished unit of ten skirmishers:
I built the emerging skeletons to match the style of my other scorpion-themed archers.
This allows me to add them in and bump the units to 20-strong...
...or drop the standard bearer and musician to field them as a unit of 18 skeleton skirmishers. Only one unit in the army can be upgraded to have the Ambushers rule, and I would include all the emerging skeletons in that unit to denote their Ambushing ability.
Another Tomb Kings project that I've been working on is the Tomb Swarms. I reviewed these several posts back, and I've since got them assembled. (One cool detail I discovered after assembling them is that, when the bases are ranked up, the arcs of bugs line up and continue from one base to the other.)
I added a few extra flying scarabs, taken from the Sepulchral Stalkers kit and the Necrosphinx kit.
The swarms' painting is underway, but I've kind of stalled on them.
Instead, I'm working on my baggage train for an upcoming tournament. It's a cart made from chariot parts, the old metal wight king's horse, and lots of spare bits from the Bone Dragon kit.
I'm also building some much-needed Tomb Guard, converted with the great weapons from the Grave Guard kit as the halberd blades, and the whole model reposed to hold it two-handed.
And another project that will immediately be bumped to the top of the queue is the new battle standard bearer when it's released. That scorpion motif on the banner top is going to fit right in with Selketta's Scorpion Brigade! I'm already planning how I'll convert the miniature to make it unique. My only concern about these new characters is that the bases for the skeleton steeds look like they are 30mm x 60mm, which is the size of normal heavy cavalry. But, the Tomb Kings cavalry units are all on 25mm cavalry bases, which means that a character mounted on a 30mm cavalry bases won't rank up properly. Hmmm...
'Til Next Time!
