Terrain Showcase: Star Wars Scrapyard, Part 3

In this installment, we'll take a look at the main buildings that I made for Atomic Mass Games' Star Wars: Shatterpoint battlefield.

I've been discussing this project in sections, covering each element from start to finish. But the reality of it is that I was sort of working on everything at the same time. Nearly everything was fully constructed before I began the painting, as you can see here, and the buildings made from the Star Wars: Shatterpoint terrain sets were the first bits to be completely finished.

I wanted to embellish the structures so they fit thematically with the scrapyard and looked as though they served a function in the environment. I wrote a series of Transmissions for Atomic Mass Games about this terrain project, and you can see the one about adding extra detail to the Shatterpoint buildings here.

Pumping Station

The pumping station was made from the building in the Shatterpoint core set, with lots of extra pipes mede from styrene rod bent with a heat gun and bits of styrene tube added over top to create the cuffs.

To tie the buildings into the scrapyard, I based each one on a layer of foam core board and added all manner of scrap and debris around the perimeter. I used foam core for the bases rather than MDF or thick styrene so I could carve out the underside, creating a hollow that would allow these buildings to sit overtop of the water pools and scrap on the main board.

Comms Station

This building was made out of the Tech Shed from the Take Cover terrain pack with added antennas and bits from the Star Wars: Legion Priority Supplies battlefield Expansion.

Control Tower

I imagined this control tower housing the controls for the crane, and serving as an observation deck where the scrapyard's foreman might be stationed to oversee daily operations. It was made from the High Ground terrain pack and various scenery parts from other sets.

The two base columns for the control tower were painted separately so I could access all the detail under the walkway.

Ladders and Walkways

A last-minute addition to the project was a set of walkways and ladders that could connect some of the buildings together:

All of the buildings have a groove around the edge of their upper level to allow the walkways to hook into them. The ladders didn't have anything like that, so I added a piece of T-shaped styrene rod that was trimmed and spaced out to match the groove on the walkways. I also extended the tops of the ladders to extend above the attachment point because, in real life, it's very difficult to climb onto a surface from a ladder that just stops at the edge. The extended hand holds are necessary to climb up comfortably.

The walkways and ladders were all sprayed with a light grey and washed with rust colors. The ladder rungs were picked out with metal– rusty at the edges and cleaner silver on the rungs themselves. The chipped paint was applied with a sponge dipped in a mix of dark metallic color and rust colors.

'Til next time!
