The Heavy Hitters are Coming

It's been a busy few weeks, but I've managed to get in some more progress on my elite units for The Old World.

Three of the Sepulchral Stalkers are fully assembled and based. The new halberds worked out great! I only did some minor work on the faces– Removing the decorative hooks and icons on the sides of their jaws, and connecting the split jaw of the open-mouthed head. Fun fact: I never knew that snake jaws are actually in two halves and split apart like that. But I thought it looked weird because the Sepulchral Stalkers have more or less human- looking skulls, and the chin decoration was also split apart. (Come to think of it, it wouldn't make sense to even have chin decorations on something with a split snake jaw.)

I modeled the bases with some Skull Forge Scenics ruined obelisks, and I used them to prop up the model in a couple places so the weapon would be clear of the model next to it.

I'm pretty happy with how this guy's body is curling around the upright obelisk:

I just have to base the remaining three stalkers and they'll be ready for some paint!

Since the Tomb Kings haven't reached 2000 points yet, I've been using my Vampire Counts for larger games. I had 20 Grave Guard re-based to 25mm bases, and they haven't been able to hold out against other large elite units like Dwarf Ironbreakers and Beastmen Minotaurs. I finally bit the bullet and finished the rest of my 40-man Execution Guard regiment. And I have to say, they were able to hold out a lot better in combat, soaking up casualties and sticking around long enough to be replenished by my necromancers' Invocations of Nehek.

I also made another spacer tray for my zombies and skeletons still on 20mm bases, so my Vampire Counts are finally in a place where I can comfortably field everything without it looking sloppy. Now I can turn my attention back to building those feral ghouls, which will be my assembly project as I am painting the Sepulchral Stalkers.

'Til next time!

  1. The way the Sepulchral Stalkers sit on their bases looks very natural - you can really see them slithering along and over the obelisks!

    1. Thanks! It was a little tricky because the whole model is very forward heavy –They're not unbalanced, but the main mass of the model is concentrated in the front third of the base.
