Happy New Year!

Happy New Year, everyone!  For the first post of 2019, I'm going to look back and see how I did on the Wargame Hobby Bingo Card, and talk about my plans and projects for this year...

It was a photo finish, but I wrapped up the Warscryer Citadel on New Year's Eve with about five minutes to spare.  I snapped a quick picture and I'll get some better glamor shots and post a final installment for the project log later this week.

My final Bingo card shaped up like this:

That's a Bingo on two rows, but I fell short of my goal to complete the entire card. I came close to finishing the Terrorgheist but just couldn't make it. He's just awaiting an ink wash on the bones, and meat, and some final highlighting and "bloodying."

When it comes to the number of models finished over the course of the year, my total is right around 77, including Age of Sigmar endless spells and 40K vehicles. I've also got two fully modeled battlefields and a bunch of army accessories and scenery under by belt.

Some of my favorite projects from 2018–

Finishing up my Adepta Sororitas team for Shadow War Armageddon.

The extensive conversion of the Skaven Plague Priest with the bell and spines from the Death Guard Noxious Blightbringer.

Finally completing some of my oldest backlog models for the Black Templars– The scout sniper squad and Vindicators.

Two big terrain commissions, the Hoth Echo Base for Star Wars: Legion, and the harbor and ship for Wild West Exodus.

A few more projects that were years in the making– Oren Koth the mounted Wight King, and the Blood Knight and Banshee conversions.

In 2018 we also got a new edition of Warhammer: Age of Sigmar, which added endless spells into the mix. They have been some of my favorite models to paint and theme for my army. I'm looking forward to finishing off the rest of the set.

And, of course the epic build of the Warscryer Citadel kit.

Skull Forge Scenics had a great year, and I added a few new products to the range– Industrial bases and the tech arm, and the ruined crypt. My first New Year resolution is to produce more resin scenery kits.

For my second resolution, I'm going to make a better effort to stay on top of my blog and post every week. I tend to neglect it whenever I'm in the middle of a scenery commission, usually because I can't show of what I'm working on and I've been too busy to work on any personal projects. But my third resolution is to maintain a #HobbyStreak for 365 days, which should help me maintain content to blog about.

#HobbyStreak is something you can do to maintain a regular painting schedule: Each day, simply paint or do some kind of hobby work for at least 30 minutes, and post a photo of your progress on Twitter with the hashtags #HobbyStreak and #HobbyStreakDay1 (or whatever day you're up to). Try to maintain at least 30 minutes every day, and see how long you can keep your streak going. If you miss a day, start over with day 1, and see if you can beat your previous record.

This year I'm going to try to make it all 365 days. It will be a rough ride, and I'm sure things like Thanksgiving and Christmas will interfere, but that's what model prep-work is for. If I can squeeze in 30 minutes of mold line cleaning before bed, it will count. Wish me luck, and follow my daily progress: @RobHawkinsHobby on Twitter.  Be sure to post your #HobbyStreak progress too!

Once I complete the Terrorgheist, my Legions army will be finished for a while. In 2019 I'll focus on all of the Nighthaunt models I've been hoarding, and I'll do a little more work for 40K, expanding my Necron force, and finally painting the Primaris Space Marines that have been patiently waiting for some attention. And there's a new Sisters of Battle army on the way. That will be difficult to resist... Here's hoping GW doesn't do anything for the Skaven this year. There's already not enough time in the day to paint all the awesome models coming down the pike!

I'm also going to try (again) to fill in the entire Wargame Hobby Bingo card over the course of the year. A few people have asked me if I'm going to make a new card for 2019, and I don't plan to. The original card is still fitting, and generic enough to be used for anything. Each row contains a square for painting, conversion work, and scenery building, so you need to do a little bit of everything to fill it in. Here's the basic card if you want to try your hand at it:

'Til next time!

  2. Thanks to that Bingo Card, I finally got some backlog done. But instead of starting over, I want to complete it this year (25/25) but I've overwrote and personalized 5 space to make it an personal challenge to myself.

  3. Happy New Year Rob and what a fabulous year you had! I was lucky enough to enough to see the Wild West Exodus board at Tabletop Gaming Live and wow! The Bingo is a great card, would it be ok to put it on my own blog, with the appropriate links back to yours?

    1. Thank you! Yes, definitely share the Bingo card around. That's what I made it for. (And honestly, this card was inspired from someone else's card, so I can't really claim ownership over the concept.)

  8. Always enjoy your hobby blogging. A years worth of your output is inspiring and fun to revisit. Tech arm ordered and I'm hoping there might be more tech arms in the future. Hope the Carrion Empire release GW just sent out adds just the right amount of models to your 2019 pile.

    1. Thanks! Ah, that Carrion Empire is going to kill me! I had plans for Nighthaunt, Marines, Necrons, and now I've got to think about Flesh Eaters AND Skaven? Not to mention the Sisters of Battle later this year!

My only saving grace is that I don't need any models out of that starter set. I've already got stuff to (accurately) represent both of the new heroes, and they'll be available on their own eventually.

  11. LOL. More like copied it. I can't complain though, because I got the idea from Martin Lymer's Hobby Bingo challenge. But at least I acknowledged him as the inspiration for my card.

    1. I was a little surprised to not even see a shout-out. Well, in any event, I'm looking forward to trying to complete your version myself this year. Keep up all the awesome work!
