After my first game with the Skaventide, I realized that I needed some options to slow my opponent's rush toward my battle line. After a week-long push, I've finally got all of my Skaven-themed endless spells finished!
First up is Vermintide– When GW released the photo of their studio model, I thought the base looked a little barren. There are actually more rats in the box that weren't added to the studio model which help to fill out the base much more. However, I still wanted a sea of rats filling the entire base of my Vermintide spell. I ended up using nearly all of my spare giant rats filling out the model. now that's one serious tide of vermin!
The Vermintide is impassable for enemy models, so it makes a nice blocker. Placed in front of an enemy unit, it will force the enemy models to move all the way around the sides of the spell's base. To help slow the enemy even further, I'm adding the Soulsnare Shackles to my arsenal–
To theme the shackles for my Skaven, I modeled them to look as though the chains burst out of the ground below a swarm of rats, sending them flying everywhere and grabbing a few with the shackles. I had some of the old metal doom wheel rats which I clipped up to look as though they were reeling away from the chains.
After the rat-based spells, I decided to finish up the rest of them. The Bell of Doom was a fun little piece. I think the most difficult part was finishing the bell without messing up the lightning and smoke, which was painted first.
Warp Lightning Vortex is a neat-looking spell. I like the way they form a big Skaven icon when set up. I added heavy washers to the bases to weigh them down a little and prevent them from shifting too much if they or the table gets bumped. I painted the tops and bottoms separately so I could get at the smoke and the lightning more easily.
My Seers and Engineers are ready to hit the battlefield again with a few new tricks up their sleeves.
One of my goals this year is to finish the remaining spells in the Malign Sorcery box. I think I'll paint the Geminids of Uhl-Gysh to match the yellow lightning of my other Skaven spells. If I model the orbs like floating pieces of warpstone, they will fit right in with the theme. Now to come up with a way to transport all these big pointy models...
