CMON commissioned me to make a few tables for them. If you're following Wrath of Kings on Facebook, you'll have seen some shots of this bard I made for them. The setting is the foothills outside a ruined fortress. They asked me to use some of 4Ground's MDF scenery for the woodsman's house and the ruins themselves.
The board itself was built using insulation foam on a wooden frame. I used a belt sander to shape and smooth the layers of foam, and covered the sides with thin plywood to create a clean, sturdy exterior.
Rocks were carved out of the foam, and wood filler putty was used to smooth the gaps and create the texture of the road.
All of the foam rocks were coated with wood glue and sprayed with black and grey primer. All of the MDF scenery was assembled and sprayed. Then I began laying out the ruins at the top of the hill.
The initial layout was a little constricting, so I rearranged things to open it up a little to allow larger models to move around more easily.
The trees were fitted with pegs so they could be removed for storage, or to allow easier play or model photography.
Everything was painted and the foliage was added, including some Skull Forge Scenics tree stumps and the grass tufts that I wrote about last month. Here are some detail shots of the finished table:
I made the trees. They are Balsa wood trunks with Woodland Scenics tree armatures for the branches, branches are covered with static grass for the pine needles. The smaller trees are Woodland Scenics armatures and regular clump foliage for the leaves.
Thanks! It's a mix of Woodland Scenics static grass and flock burnt grass, medium green, and another brand of brighter green grass I'm not sure of. And the tufts are my own (I did a tutorial a few posts back) made from a blend of Woodland Scenics green, yellow, and brown field grass.
Rob, for the ruins area how did you create the "floor" which is broken up and ruined. It looks like pre-made pieces of plasticard maybe that was broken up and glued onto the pink foam but just looking for clarification.
Great BOARD! I hope CMON keeps hiring you to build stuff for this game.
Love the board and thank you for sharing it with us
ReplyDeleteThat's one great looking board, I love how you keep everything so tidy. Especially the colours.
ReplyDeleteThat looks fantastic. Really nice use of the scenery, too.
ReplyDeleteWonderful stuff as always. Did you make the trees, or are they available somewhere?

ReplyDeleteThis looks incredible! What brand and types of flock did you use for the board?
