Sepulchral Stalkers (and Stuff)

In this post we'll take a look at my completed unit of Sepulchral Stalkers and a small fantasy house that I painted.

This house was an old resin scenery piece left over from my days at GW in the early 2000s. I had given it to my friend Steve ages ago, and he recently gave it back to I could paint it and donate it to the local shop's scenery collection.

After cleaning it up, I re-primed it with black, and then sprayed the walls with brown and gave the roof a careful zenithal spray of Revell Blue to get some color on the shingles.

I drybrushed the walls and doors with lighter shades of brown and bone to highlight the wooden timbers. Then, I painted Army Painter Skeleton Bone and Brainmatter Beige into the thatch in the wall panels, taking care not to get any on the wooden bits.

The thatch was washed with GW Agrax Earthshade, and the stonework was given a basecoat of dark grey, and drybrushed up with lighter shades of grey and bone. I washed some olive green around the base of the house to simulate moss, and I picked out the few metal bits with a dark metal and added some rust washes and streaks.

The last step was darkening the recesses of the roof with a wash of black and GW Stegadon Scale Green, and then the shingles were drybrushed with GW Fang Grey and bone.

The project only took about three days to complete, working on it for about an hour each evening.

I've brought it to its new home, and already played a game with it. The Dwarfs drove off my Tomb Kings and claimed the lands for their Thane!

The Sepulchral Stalkers took considerably more time to paint. If you've been following me on Blue Sky or Instagram, you've probably seen my slow-but-steady progress as I chipped away at these and posted it for my daily #HobbyStreak. Today I finished off their halberds and took some photos.

Here's a look at the three main poses, with some details. If you're curious about how I converted the new halberds for these models, you can see that in this post:

The small ruined obelisks I used to decorate their bases are available for sale in my Skull Forge Scenics shop.

It's really satisfying to have these guys finished, and I can't wait to get them into my next battle!

'Til next time!

  1. I have followed your progress on these miniatures over on Instagram – the time investment really payed of! I love the fade on the red armour parts and the subtle rust on the weapons!
Was that house ever available from ForgeWorld?

    1. Thank you so much! The house wasn't a Forge World piece as far as I know. I don't know who originally sculpted it, but the US studio had two different houses that we made castings of to supply scenery for the US Grand Tournaments and (I think) some were sent out to the GW shops as well. I was allowed to have one of the miscasts. (This thing was riddled with tear-out and bubbles before I cleaned it up.)

We did a bunch of one-off resin scenery projects like this that were sent to the shops to help spice up their scenery and promote events– The houses, a hobbit hole, a dead Mumakil, a Beastman herdstone, a palisade fort (that I still have the original sculpt of), and a few more that I can't remember (I'm sure we made something 40K-themed like a wrecked tank).

    2. Fun! I bet there are a lot of people, who have good memories connected to these pieces of gaming history. I hope they don't get forgotten, even if they were never comercially available!
