Project Log: The Emperor's Champion, Part 1

Magnus Romero, The Emperor's Champion was one of the first models I had painted for my Black Templars when I began collecting the army back around 2001. As much as I love this model, it's starting to show its age, and its time to upgrade him to Primaris status.

What's in the Project Queue? (October, 2021)

The past few weeks have been pretty unproductive as far as miniature painting. I've managed to prime most of my ongoing projects, but haven't really put paint on a model. I've spent a lot of time remaking some of the older, aging molds for my Skull Forge Scenics products, and keeping up with orders.

I decided to take stock of what's in my painting queue and prioritize the projects that I'd like to finish before the end of the year:

Fell Bats– I've already got a little work done on the bases, and I'm not doing anything fancy with the bats themselves, so hopefully they will paint up pretty quickly.

Converting the Punisher

The Punisher has long been one of my favorite comic book characters, and The Punisher War Journal was the first "superhero" comic that I ever bought. I was psyched to get the Marvel Crisis Protocol Punisher, and decided to convert him into a classic "War Journal" version of the character.

My Soulbligt Gravelords/ AoS 3 Not-So-Hot Take

I've had my hands full working on a large scenery commission over the past few months, and I've let my weekly blog updates fall to the wayside as I focused most of my attention on that. I also found myself experiencing a fair degree of hobby paralysis– Not knowing what (if anything) I should work on; the new Soulblight Gravelords battletome was out and would soon be followed by the 3rd edition of Age of Sigmar. My initial take on the Gravelords was pretty hot, but now that some tima has passed and everything is out, along with the 3rd edition rules and the FAQ, I think I can look at it with a clearer head.

New Camera and Scenery Turntable

Despite my best efforts to remain a luddite, the universe has finally forced me to join the 21st century and get a smart phone. My old camera had terrible resolution, with dead pixels all over the place, and since wireless companies are disabling 3G cell towers, my old phone was becoming noticeably less functional by the day. So, I got a new smart phone that actually works, with a camera that's light years better than my Olympus C-4000 Camedia. (Rest in peace, old friend.)

I can also shoot proper video now, and one thing I've wanted to do for a while is film rotations of my scenery and models. I picked up this turntable at the hobby shop:

Detailing the Dreadnought's Arms

This week, I finished up the dreadnought conversion:

Big, Boxy Dreadnought Arms

I like my dreadnoughts to be big, hulking blocks of metal. To that end, I've been converting the Primaris dreadnought into Mark V-style armor. In the previous post, I had rebuilt the shoulder armor. Now it was time to frame out the arms.

Building the Dreadnought's Armor

I made a little more progress on my Primaris-scale Mark V Dreadnought, building up the sarcophagus and the shoulder armor.
