Here's a look at the Jedi Temple display Atomic Mass Games commissioned me to make for the launch of Star Wars: Shatterpoint.
This piece was for intended for miniature photography rather than game play. The temple backdrop is an alcove, with detail on the interior and exterior to get more use out of it. The base for the temple has protruding half-circles on the front and back, and I built a set of stairs with a cutout that can fit around the circle on either side.
The base is built out of two layers of two-inch thick insulation foam, covered with a layer of Construction adhesive, and then skinned with styrene sheets. The stairs themselves were made by layering 1/4-inch foam core board, with styrene strips laid over the front of each step, and a curved layer of styrene on the top of the step, creating a slight overhang.
The styrene on the floor was cut to form paving stones, and cracks were etched into it with a sharp sculpting tool. The rounded post details were made form different thicknesses of half-round styrene rod.
The exterior of the temple was inspired by some concept art for the Jedi Temple in The Phantom menace. It's not a direct copy, but rather evokes a similar aesthetic with pillars and arches. The thick pillars are made from PVC pipes, and the walls were made from foam core board, with the corners covered with styrene strips.
The top was left open to allow plenty of light in (and it would be out of frame in photographs).
The walls of the interior were decorated with layers of styrene card, and the pillars were constructed from PVC pipe with boxes built on the ends that fit into position around the corners of the room.
Here's the finished construction of the interior and exterior, with the stairs re-positioned for each photograph:
The painting was mostly done with sprays– different shades of grey and some grey and white spattered with a toothbrush to create a pebbly stone appearance on the floor and steps. For the emblem on the floor, I masked and sprayed the red and yellow circles, and hand painted the black symbol.
The interior was kept fairly light and clean, with silver drybrushed over the darker grey of the pillars and wall trim.
On the exterior of the temple, I went with a darker grey and more specked stone texture. I also painted in some cracks, and added burgundy accents.
The temple has appeared in the launch video for Star Wars: Shatterpoint and a few promotional photographs on theAtomic Mass Games website.
I always appreciate these scratch-building breakdowns of yours. You have a very distinctive style that's so clean and professional-looking. It feels like I can always spot a Hawkins piece leafing through a tabletop magazine

ReplyDeleteThank you so much! I only wish I had taken more photos of the building step-by-step, but I was under a time crunch. :D
